Sample Final Examination

Please answer the following four (4) questions.  Each is worth 25 points.  Your answers should be complete, but concise.  Please use essay format for your answers.  Supporting your answers using citations is strongly encouraged.  Re-read your answers if time allows as a final check.

1.  What makes a frog a frog and not a salamander? Or if you prefer differentiate between Caudata and Anura.

2.  What makes a lizard not a snake?  Then follow-up in your answer by providing an argument which defines why or why not a snake is a lizard.

3.  Provide a time-line with major points for reptile evolution.  Include in your answer major groups, their approximate arrival and departure dates, and the extant diversity to which they gave rise.

4.  Your professor claims to have discovered a new anuran in Texas.  Provide a fairly detailed program to investigate the taxonomic status of the purported new amphibian, a field program to investigate its life history, and any other work you would propose as important to defining this animal for science.  You may use a non-strictly essay format for this final question.  (i.e. lists, flow charts, etc.)
