Grading Policy

In general, the lab portion of BIO 2450 is worth 30% of the entire course grade and the lecture exams comprise the remaining 70%. The lab grade is based on several quizzes and worksheets and two research papers: the PopGen paper and the DNA paper. Your lab instructor will explain the details of these assignments.

Lab Grade (30% of your overall class grade)
  • 30% Quizzes are at the beginning of each lab period and covers material from the previous week's lab as well as the current week's lab.  To prepare for quizzes, read the lab manual, notes taken in lab and lecture, and the iGenetics textbook.

  • 20% Worksheets from your lab manual are to be turned in to me at the beginning of lab before the quiz.

  • 10% Population Genetics paper - due Friday, March 10, 2006 by 5 p.m. Turn you paper in to me or put it in my mailbox on the 3rd floor down the hall from the Biology office.  Follow pages 3-8; 47-51 in your lab manual to write a successful paper.

  • 30% DNA paper - due Friday, April 28, 2006 by 5 p.m.  Turn your paper in to me or put it in my mailbox on the 3rd floor down the hall from the Biology office.  Follow pages 3-8; 83 in your lab manual to write a successful paper.

  • 10% Participation includes your attitude, attendance, proper usage of equipment and reagents, contribution to group work, and clean-up.

Policies
  • Late worksheets, quizzes, papers, etc. will not be accepted.  Exceptions will only be made in emergency cases.

  • You are allowed one make-up lab which you a) must complete in the same week as the missed lab and b) need written permission from Dr. Forstner to the lab instructor and to the other instructor where you are attending the missed lab.

  • No food or drink, no cell phones.  No open-toed shoes, no shorts or short skirts, or you will be sent home.  This is for your safety.
